Recently I purchased some gigantic leeks… and I have to admit, they’d been sitting in my fridge for a few days while I tried to figure out what the heck to do with them. If you haven’t cooked with or seen leeks before, they kind of look like giant scallions, with really thick layers and covered in tons of dirt and grit. When I order off FreshDirect, I usually try to order items that pertain to a particular recipe, so that I’m able to stick to some sort of plan for my meals for the week. But sometimes, I get a little click-happy and end up buying whatever looks good or I’m craving at the moment. That’s how you end up with a delivery like I did last night, with a family pack of pork chops, a tub of kalamata olives, a new batch of Meyer lemons, horseradish (?!), and a couple liters of Diet Dr Pepper. On football Sundays, nothing quite goes as well together as meat and beer. I defy you to find a more winning combination. And in honor of the Jets making it to the AFC championship, I decided to go with a green-and-white theme. Some good that did.

I recently joined a community run by my culinary/life hero, Ree Drummond (aka the Pioneer Woman, called Tasty Kitchen. In the realm of obvious website names (alongside totalnoms.com, of course), this one definitely lives up to expectations. Members can share, rate, and connect over recipes that come from all over the world- it’s a great place to get inspired when you aren’t sure what to make for dinner next.
I found myself in such a conundrum earlier this week, as I was pondering over what to order off FreshDirect again. Featured on the front page of Tasty Kitchen was a blog post about this beautiful looking soup, served in my favorite… square bowls!
I like this soup because not only is it vegetarian (if you use vegetable broth), but its hearty- the garlic and thyme come in with really robust flavors, and the cheddar adds a lovely creaminess that makes this a meal that really is comforting after a long day in the middle of winter. [Read more…]
