Dating a Filipino dude for nearly four years means you get a lot of exposure to all kinds of yummy food. Pancit, lechon, LUMPIA (yum), ensaymada, bitsu-bitsu and more await every family gathering. I love pretty much everything I try (although I will admit I will probably never, ever try balut [don’t google it]). Continue reading
There’s not much of a better way to start off your New Year than with a goal of a healthy diet. I know that’s definitely going to be a goal of mine- in particular, I really want to start eating less meat. I have been reading Mark Bittman’s book, Food Matters: A Guide to Conscious Eating, lately, and its an eye-opening look at how the meat we eat affects our bodies, our environment, and of course the animals we consume.
That said, I’m definitely not going to be cutting out meat from my diet completely anytime soon- and I’m not sure a drastic removal of that kind of food from my normal consumption is something that is good for my body anyway. However, I’ve started making a more conscious effort to get protein from sources other than meat- and these veggie burgers are no exception. Continue reading
If you’re a smartphone user, you know there are a LOT of foodie apps out there. I have a whole folder on my iPhone dedicated to food apps- everything from recipe finders, meal planners, barcode scanners and takeout order sites. It can be a little overwhelming to figure out which ones are useful, inspiring, mouth-watering as well as which ones are not-so-great or just plain silly.
Today on the examining table is an app inspired by one of my favorite cookbooks of all time: How to Cook Everything by Mark Bittman. Continue reading
Sometimes I toy with the idea of going vegetarian. I’d probably be giving my body, my wallet, and the environment a break. I’ve seen enough movies about how bad the meat industry is, and how averse consuming certain meat products can be for your health and the environment.
And when I say I’ve “seen” these movies, I mean I either heard people talking about them or briefly read the back of the DVD case, and promptly walked away because frankly, what I don’t know is better for my mental health.
Also, I love meat. So there’s that. Continue reading
Just when I thought that McDonald’s might actually be taking a step in the right direction with their new Fruit and Maple Oatmeal, I read a pretty harrowing account of what was actually going on at the Golden Arches. OK, “harrowing” might be a little extreme… but you gotta know, I really, really love oatmeal.
Turns out, according to my main man Mark Bittman, that Mickey D’s automatically adds cream to the oatmeal, along with copious amounts of sugar and “11 weird ingredients you would never keep in your kitchen.” Really? Oats don’t need all that- they just need a little love, baby! Continue reading
