When I order off FreshDirect, I usually try to order items that pertain to a particular recipe, so that I’m able to stick to some sort of plan for my meals for the week. But sometimes, I get a little click-happy and end up buying whatever looks good or I’m craving at the moment. That’s how you end up with a delivery like I did last night, with a family pack of pork chops, a tub of kalamata olives, a new batch of Meyer lemons, horseradish (?!), and a couple liters of Diet Dr Pepper. It seems counter-intuitive to me that citrus fruits are in season during the wintertime, but I’m certainly not complaining. I’ve been taking advantage of FreshDirect’s seasonal deals on citrus the past few weeks, ordering a crate of clementines, a few limes (one of which I used with the Chili with Chicken and Chipotles, and a beautiful pack of Meyer lemons.
And even though it’s freezing here in the Northeast and many people’s first instinct is to go for the heavy comfort food, I sometimes still crave the lightness of a fresh salad. Perhaps it’s a way to make amends for all of the overindulgence of the holiday season… my body’s probably happy for the break! [Read more…]
One of my favorite gifts this Christmas came from my boyfriend’s brother and sister-in-law: a Calphalon Unison sear pan. I had seen it a few times on Food Network commercials featuring Michael Symon, and have been waiting for a perfect opportunity to use it. One of my purchases from FreshDirect this week was a package of 4 one-inch thick boneless pork chops- so, as they say… it’s go time for the other white meat (people say that, right?).
This is actually a recipe I made up this morning while walking to the PATH train. I knew I wanted to get that nice sear crust on the pork chops, and then braise them in a flavorful liquid to make them tender and delicious. If I had had white wine on hand, I would have used this in place of the chicken broth- however, both work totally fine. [Read more…]
