Total Noms turns 100, some changes, and a GIVEAWAY!

Yes, you heard right, 100 years ago, I started this here blog to document my love of fo- OK, fine, more like a year and a half ago. But it’s been 100 posts and if you’ve been with me through them all, I salute you! And thank you very, very much from the bottom of my tummy.

I’ve been thinking what I could do that would be fun to celebrate my 100 post-aversary here on my little corner of the Internet. A parade admittedly seemed a bit grandiose, but just a mere acknowledgement of this momentous milestone didn’t seem like enough. So I’m doing what any self-respecting blogger would do- avoid real work and make a LIST!

Chicken Tortilla Soup

Total Noms’ most popular post in terms of views is the Hummus Crusted Chicken, closely followed by Chicken Tortilla Soup. I’m not really surprised since both are some of my favorite recipes myself!

2. My favorite post

pizzette with herbed goat cheese, heirloom tomatoes and mushrooms

One of my absolute favorite posts in terms of both preparation and taste is my original Pizzette with Herbed Goat Cheese and Heirloom Tomatoes. Everything about this recipe was fun for me- from the size of the pizzas, to herb-infused goat cheese, to the caramelized onions, and the use of delicious heirloom cherry tomatoes. I need to make these again soon!

3. Post I was surprised people didn’t get more excited about

Butternut Squash Risotto with Crispy Sage and Brown Butter

I was surprised people didn’t get more jazzed about my butternut squash risotto. I think sometimes I think just because I love something, that everyone else will too 🙂 If you haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, you should! Risotto makes everything better!

4. Best food blogging-related experience so far

I had an absolute blast meeting up with Joanne from Fifteen Spatulas last week at Momofuku Milk Bar. She is the sweetest person, and an amazing blogger. If you haven’t checked out her blog yet, you need to- her photography is phenomenal, she makes delicious food, and her recipes are great for everyone from a novice home cook to the most seasoned of chefs. She has been so helpful to me throughout this whole experience of blogging, and a lot of the improvements you’ll be seeing around the site come from chats with her!

5. Weirdest thing people have searched for on Google that led them to my site:

I have a great recipe for peach pie here- it’s another one of my favorites. However, apparently there are a series of -how do I put this- adult interpretations of Super Mario’s girlfriend, Princess Peach, running around the internet. Hence, the huge influx of traffic from people searching for “Peach Pie 3”. I will leave your imaginations to that and move on to…

6. What I’ve learned

I have learned so much in this past year and a half of blogging. Hopefully, you’ll notice my photography has (somewhat) improved, and let me tell you, I have a long ways to go. There was also that time I originally listed a recipe for quesadillas without including CHEESE in the ingredients (really) – and that hasn’t happened again since, so there’s something. I’ve learned more about WordPress and plugins and Creative Commons and ad networks than I ever thought possible- and there’s so much more to come!

7. What I still need to make


If you don’t know me personally, you may not know that my father’s family is from Argentina. You also may not know my grandmother makes the worlds GREATEST beef empanadas on the planet. My mission before the end of 2012 is to get that recipe, record it for prosperity, and enlighten the rest of the world to their greatness! 🙂

8. Who I need to thank


Yes, we’re nearing the end, so its time for me to make my acceptance speech/start wrapping it up. First off, I couldn’t have done any of this (sniff) without my (sniff) amazing partner and best friend, my main man PJ. He allows me to make messes, accompanies me grocery shopping even when he’d rather play video games, and is my guinea pig when I need a second opinion. He also is responsible for my new fancy D-SLR, so he’s basically the best! And I’d also like to thank my mom and dad for instilling a strong sense of culinary adventure in me from a young age.

9. My plans for THE FUTURE (dun dun dun)

As you may have noticed, we have a new look for the site! Woo hoo! I’ve also started an email newsletter subscription service, way up on the top right over there in the column to the right. I’m still working really hard on this but will hopefully have something super fun and great for you guys in the near future. Other than that, I’m also working on posting more frequently, possibly bringing in some guest posts, and hopefully more GIVEAWAYS! … which leads me to…

  1. So uhh…. Not to live up to stereotypes or anything. But Mal you’re blog is seriously lacking in soul foods! All this healthy stuff is great, but the streets are dying for a mean Chicken & Waffles T-Noms recipe!!!

    PS: If you can somehow incorporate bacon/bacon bits into that….mannnnnnnn

  2. Yay! Mally! I’m so proud of you! The blog has been beautifully shaped over the past 100 posts and I can’t wait to see what more you will have in store for me and my tummy! You know I’m always asking for more tomatoes and would love a summer recipe that doesn’t require turning on an oven. Bring it on!

  3. You challenge me to try all kinds of new recipes. I’m trying to do more with quinoa, so I’d love to see more recipes with this. Congratulations, and I love the improvements.
